Tourist match v Brixham St Mary’s

A disappointing day at the office today. We lost two rinks to four and by 99 shots to 88. On the plus side, the visitors were good company, had a drink afterwards and insisted we organise a raffle.

Ladies v Wedmore Friendly

A change from Rinks to Triples at short notice meant alterations to teams . It also meant a few players trying out new positions in the teams- and they all did well. We won 2 rinks and lost 1 ,with particular praise for rink 1 who came from 0-8 down to win by 1 shot especially as Sue Hares was by now heavily bandaged on a leg and an elbow after a heavy fall on a wooden surface.

 Carol Mildon,Sue Hares,Chrissie Bryant 15-14;
Jen Atkinson,Maureen Sprouting,Gill Webb 5 – 21  Tina Darkin, Lin Coombe, Angela Bougourd/ Margaret Howell who replaced Angela when her injured shoulder became painful.  13-10

Over 55’s Pioneers v Clevedon Prom

The Pioneers lost again this time away at The Prom. Once again one player did not turn up and 2 points and 10 shots were lost before the game began. To add insult to injury the non counting rink won as did the Captain’s rink again . The rink skipped by new member Jim Coleman came back from 0-8 to go into the last end 2 shots ahead only to be cruelly deprived of victory when the home team picked up 3 shots to win by 1 shot. Wilf Ainsworth’s rink also came close but overall the deficit was 69 – 101
K Whatling,L Collier,M Nash 15 -11;D Holt,T Atkinson,W Ainsworth 13 -15,M Trenchard,R Lowis,J Coleman 21 -22;A Pow,DB Light,P Cast 10 – 23;L V Haaren,J Hart,R Pike 10 – 20 (only 5 rinks)

BE 2 x 4’s Competition at Bath

Lost at Bath this evening by 23 – 33. Not a disgrace because we were against Bath’s Prem 1 team, including an England international and several Middleton Cup players.

In fact, we won the same number of ends as Bath, it’s just that we were scoring ones and twos whilst they were scoring the occasional 3, 4 or 5.

Ladies played Portishead RBL at Home in NSTL
‘oh what it could have been’ afternoon.

The rain kept off and we started well but the final result was very disappointing.  Rink 1 battled so hard but could not contain the  member of England’s fours who only stepped in at the very last minute when a member of the team didn’t turn up. Our other 2 triples were nearly over the finishing line but both came off second best on the last end to both lose by one shot.
Overall 30 – 47

Over 55’s KO Cup 1st Round
Pioneers v Portishead RBL at Home

This was always going to be a difficult one to win. Our new team against RBL from the 1st Division. We gave a good account of ourselves on 3 rinks , losing on Peter Cast’s rink by 5 and Ray Pike’s by 3 shots. The Captain’s rink skipped by Mike Nash did even better winning 22 -17  against a very experianced rink skipped by D Gregory. Overall : 73 – 134

Ladies v Yatton Friendly Away

Our first friendly of the season showed  our enthusiasm but not the stamina to finish the games off.  Two rinks were  holding their own until the last 3 ends when the opposition piled on the pressure to allow Yatton to win all rinks.  A useful practice on an unforgiving green.

Sue Hares, Lin Coombe, Yvonne Greenwood, Sue Lowis 13 – 21

NSBA 4 Dimensions v Victoria Home

Not a good day today, we lost 0 – 4. The singles and pairs were very one-sided and the rinks was quite close. The triples was the interesting rink. We fought back from 2 – 9 down to lead 13 – 9 but Victoria scored 9 on the last three ends to seal victory.

18th May 2024
SCL Div 3 North  C v Bristol C Home
Our C Team lost their first match of the season  mainly due to the fact that, one Bristol player failed to turn up. We,(perhaps naively), ‘loaned’ a Winscombe player – namely M.T. Mooney who became our ‘nemesis – playing better than anyone on that rink! Despite docking 25% off their rink score, they still finished well ahead. In retrospect, a lesson learned for sure! The game was beset with intermittent thunderstorms and torrential rain which slowed play, but undaunted we completed the match.
A Pow, M Williamson,J Hart, C Bryant won 19 – 15; T Poole, L Van Haaren, L Collier, R Pike lost 14 – 21; D Holt, C Byles, M Trenchard, D Johnson Lost 9 -32 (24-25%) Overall 42(2pts) – 60(10pts)

Good all round performance with Dave Brown standing in for an injured Gordon Poynter. Chris Greenwood’s rink came up against a particularly annoying skip who kept destroying their holding ends.

Winscombe actually lost on 2 of the 3 rinks, but the rink skipped by Captain Margaret Howell, including vice captain Yvonne Greenwood, led by Pauline Pow with MT Mooney scored enough shots to secure the win by 6 shots. It’s a team game and the other two rinks kept their  deficits down to just  7 shots. A good start to the season.

Winscombe  v Abercarn
A mixed Winscombe team took part in our first international tour in living memory, one day to Abercarn in Wales. Despite our captain, Chris Greenwood, being held up in traffic and arriving as the match was due to start a very enjoyable day was had, until a thunder and lightning storm stopped the match after a couple of hours. As we were ahead on one rink, behind in another and two were finely poised the match was declared a draw, and we retired to the clubhouse for traditional Welsh hospitality.

Winscombe A v West Backwell Home
SCL Premier Division 2

A good and exciting game today. Keith Bolton’s rink was last to finish and on the last end we were one shot down across the green. With the last bowl, Keith converted holding one to win by two for an overall victory of 60 – 59 and 8 pts to 4 pts. However, none of this would have mattered without a good win on Mike Adams rink.

The Pioneers second match was also away , this time at Portishead. 3 substitutes were borrowed from the Originals but this only produced a result on one rink! However, overall performance was much improved  with The Pioneers winning on 3 of the 5 counting rinks. Once again they were one man short and dropped 10 shots and 2 points. Overall it was still a loss on shots 77 – 100 but much closer without the 10 shot penalty.
