Mens’ Section Report
Play during July was and continues to be affected by the unusually hot weather. Both of the Parrot Shield matches were postponed although the first leg was finally played at home on the 29th July and won by Banwell who take a 84/77 lead into the next round. Like last year our annual match against Avon and Somerset Police was abandoned because they could not raise a team. We won our first match in the Turnbull Cup against Wells but lost our second match against Street. Despite difficulties raising a team we played our annual match in Exmouth against Madeira. Their watering system had been broken for two weeks prior to our match so conditions were challenging. In the event we just managed to win 99/98 and retained the Inkstand trophy for another year.
A Team: After a strong win against North Petherton at the beginning of the month we experienced two losses. Against Ilminster B in a low scoring match we narrowly lost 41/45 but against Taunton Deane A we failed to score any points. We currently sit 5th in the league of 12 teams We go into August for the final three games of the season with games against Weston Bath A who are above us in the league and Bath B and Purnell A who are currently below us.
B Team: A mixed month for us with 2 twelve points wins against Banwell away and RBL C at home followed by 2 points from the game at Ashcombe c on their top green. The results mean we are second on points but third on shots, with Nailsea close behind us. August will see us playing an unbeaten Victoria b team in what could be a crucial game, Wedmore b away and Yatton b completes our fixtures. We used 19 different players over the July matches adding 26 points and increasing our shot difference by 62. Overall not too bad and a big thank you to all who played.
Originals: From Captain Chris – The originals remained second in the over-55 league, and progressed through to the semi final of the cup where we will play away at Burnham in September.
Pioneers: From Captain Lew – Throughout July the Pioneers played 4 matches ,
Markmoor lost by 3 shots gaining 8 points
Wedmore lost by 12 shots gaining 6 points
Banwell lost by 30 shots gaining 4 points.
Ashcombe Templers WON BY 16 SHOTS gaining 16 points
Our first win and I was away!
In the Pioneers defence Ashcombe was the only club with more than 1 team and I hope all the squad are enjoying their bowls.
Reflecting on July our playing experience in both external and internal matches has been impacted by weather conditions (and the World Cup). Moreover, it is apparent that real life, holidays and general life ’stuff’ has affected availability resulting in different decisions having to be made by the selection committee. It is also apparent that sometimes members are not keeping their availability up to date and then becoming surprised when not selected. A plea to everyone, please ensure you have logged your availability at least a month in advance and if you have to make any last minute changes, please flag this up to your team captain.
Ladies Captain Report.
Our season continues to be challenging due to the hot weather, holidays and injuries. However we remain positive throughout. Chris Byles is out for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury.
The friendly game against Mark Moor at home was played in good spirits on Tuesday 7 th July. Sadly we lost by only 1 shot.
A heatwave meant the game against Portishead RBL on Friday 10 th July was postponed and has been rearranged for 17 th August.
On Tuesday 14 th July the game away at Portishead was reduced to 15 ends due to the heat. The game resulted in a draw with us gaining 4 points in the NSTL league.
Away at Clevedon Prom NSTL league on 16 th July was yet again reduced to 15 ends. Unfortunately we lost overall.
Tuesday 21 st playing away at Clevedon in the Wessex league we were very pleased with a win gaining 8 points.
Two days later we played away at Portishead RBL in the NSTL league. A very heavy loss gaining 0 points.
Monday 27 th July we played Long Ashton at home in the NSTL league. Yet again a heavy loss gaining 0 points.
We had a very enjoyable trip to Yeovil to play in the Fear Cup. The green was what can only be described as being like concrete. Being fortunate to coming from a club with a beautiful green we all found this green very interesting. Yet again the game was reduced to 15 ends. Sadly we lost the game therefore we are now in the Fear Plate. Following the game a cream tea was enjoyed by all.
Our afternoon out was enhanced by the excitement of travelling together on a mini bus. Treats and Prosecco may have contributed to the fun!
Due to two teams withdrawing we are through to the quarterfinals to be held at Somerton on Friday 7 th August.
The Bob Flay competition was held on Sunday 26 th July. There were 16 entries and was very well organised by Shelley assisted by Lorna. We are very grateful to them both for giving up their time.
Winners: Carol Hopes and Angela Bourgourd.
Runners up: Sue Lewis and Maureen Bennett.
Angela and Wilf had arranged for Mo to join us all on a FaceTime call. Mo was delighted to join us and the history of the cup was explained together with its importance to us all.
Another cream tea to round off the afternoon was appreciated by all.
Unfortunately our efforts are not reflected in recent results. Everyone plays with determination and a competitive spirit whilst enjoying the game.
We are currently bottom of the NSTL league. Unfortunately the Wessex league table has not been produced yet. We hope and anticipate to be in a higher position.
It was agreed that Sam Rawles a Beginners membership could play in matches being so close to the end of season.
Estate Report.
The Canopy work of replacing the polycarbonate roof sheets has now been completed along with the roof replacement between the changing rooms.
To date I am waiting for the cost of new wooden side gates from Banwell Garden Centre.
I have emailed the working party volunteers that we will have a general tidy up of the estate on 5th August.
Further to a question I was asked regarding the club having solar panels, Estimated costs were table around £9500. It was decided to proceed with investigating prices but not to make any decision until later.
A suggestion to install Air conditioning units was met with doubt because of the prices involved.
It was such plans should be put onto a formal Future Plan outlin.
Social. Only 34 tickets sold for the Pig Roast.
.Welfare. We wish Eve Watts our best wishes.
