The Men’s Open Triples is looking good for a 24 team turn out.

At time of printing this I have 18 teams fully paid up. Avoncrop will field a team making a total of 19. There are 3 teams committing to be with us on the day and arranging entry forms and cash. I expect them to pay up soon. Entry forms in post apparently but I have spoken with the team leaders so all should be good. I have sent out many emails to teams that played last season and the season before but, as usual, received no replies. The teams concerned are usually late to sort themselves out, so I’ll leave it until the end of May to chase them up.

Mens’ Section Report

  • Not intending to present a blow by blow exposition of our matches, rather general observations • It was gratifying to see 70 plus club members take to the green on our opening day. The wall of short woods that each skip was faced with was probably good for the soul!
  • Having lost heavily to St Andrews in the Presidents Shield match on the 25th of April it was heartening to emphatically turn the tables a week later beating them in our A team’s first County match of the season achieving a strong 10/2 win. Even more satisfying was the fact that all three of our teams won. The A and B teams continued their momentum winning their second round matches.
  • Although we lost our BE Top Club match against Weston Bath it was a very close low scoring match that was only decided on the last wood of the last end. Our team was missing some of our traditionally strong players but proved to be an impressive outing for some newer players and player combinations.
  • Despite some inevitable bugs our new online booking system is proving invaluable. Like all systems, it only works well if people use it and use it sensibly. Some of the user issues becoming apparent: . People not committing to play until the last minute making selection difficult. . People not amending their availability having committed to play. Ken has created a means by which Captain’s can close availability just before selection.
  • Another apparent issue has been what appears to be ‘selective’ availability. The Sydney Gardens Trophy is a good example in that those making themselves available were less than the size of team required. Moreover, we lacked sufficient of our stronger players. As the season progresses I can of course shape my selection to reflect a player’s depth of support for his/her club.

Ladies Captain Report.

Our pre season meeting 0n Wednesday 8th April was very well attended by 20 ladies with 6 apologies. An outline of the season was given and encouraged ladies to use the online availability system. Competitions, NSTL, Wessex and Flowers internal leagues were explained. Opportunities for play and involvement in the club was encouraged including mentoring and joining in with the catering.

We held three well attended practice sessions which focused on improving current skills and gave players the opportunity to play in different positions.

Our first friendly game away against Banwell was a win for Winscombe. Our second friendly against Isle of Wedmore at home was lost by just 5 shots.

The first NSTL game at home against Ashcombe on Thursday 7 th May was played in good spirits. Winscombe lost by just 7 shots.

Overall we feel that there is improvement in our game and we have a great team of players with which to draw upon.

The Open Days have been popular with new ladies joining. The mentoring system will be put in place and they will be encouraged to attend Monday club.

Shelley has spoken to Chrissie and myself as the number of ladies entering club competitions is low. We will keep the competitions as they are this year but we will look at different options for next year.
