The Men’s Open Triples event was a success with help from some club members who were still in bed when they were invited to play. Take a bow Wilf, Chris Bryant and Colin Byles! The day made a profit of £1177.76 plus bar takings. Thanks to the many helpers who are an important cog in a well organised wheel. Finally, the kitchen organisation was impressive and the food looked good even though I hate bloody salad. Well dome Margaret and her slaves.
We hosted some matches with players requiring neutral venues and the feedback was positive. The pig got a tad fatter as we didn’t charge rink fees and hinted at a charity donation. I gather the bar took money so all went ok.
An Originals match with RBL (away) has been rearranged to avoid both O/55s teams playing on the same day. The annual Friendly with Wyrall Park (away) has been cancelled due to the chaotic parking arrangements with a local supermarket. We will re-organise these games next year.
I have booked a tourist match with Taibach (Port Talbot) for Friday 23rd. May. A small party of 12 players (possibly more) will come over. They are staying in B&B accommodation so food will be required and more socialising is pretty much guaranteed. More details nearer the time.
The Vice President expressed his disappointment that the long standing Bath triples match was with a mixed team from Bath.
Mens’ Section Report
Winscombe’s teams have continued to show good form in the last month.
Early in the month City of Wells were narrowly defeated in the Turnbull Cup before we were beaten by Street on an extra end. Then we retained the Parrot Shield against Banwell over two legs by 208 shots to 199. Later in the month we took the Stewart Inkstand Trophy to the Madeira Club in Exmouth and then brought it back after a 123 — 114 victory.
In the Premier Two Division, the ‘A’ Team began poorly by losing to lowly North Petherton 3 —9 but then beat top-of-the-table llminster 12 O and Bloomfield 10 — 2 at Bath. That leaves us in a comparatively safe fifth place (of twelve) with two games to play. The ‘B’ Team won two and lost two whilst the ‘C’ Team won one and lost three.
The Originals Over 55s kept its 100% record with three wins whilst the Pioneers Over55s won one game and lost one.
Winscombe’s Men’s Triples Tournament was blessed with fine weather and was a very successful day with magnificent support from members with catering and behind the bar. Once again, the star of the show was our green. Huge thanks to our dedicated team of greenkeepers.
The Monday Night Club has been a particular success this year. Under the principal guidance of Mike Smart, it has provided an opportunity for new members to learn and develop their game and for some members who struggle to represent our club in competitive matches to have regular competition. A number of members, new to the game, have forced their way into our league and trophy sides.
Friendlies continue to pose a conundrum for us. One such match against Bridgwater was cancelled because it clashed with a leg of the Parrot Shield and we were unable to field a second team on the same day. I think we are going to have to think hard about proposed friendlies in coming years. They provide an excellent entry into representing our club for less experienced members but they are often cancelled, leaving those members frustrated in their ambitions.
This friendly match issues was discussed and the overall opinion was we should keep these matches going particularly for the ladies section which gave them the opportunity to play in friendlies, and to give newer bowlers the opportunity to play in matches.
Ladies Captain Report.
A very disappointing month in which we were well beaten in some games and although we had some close rinks we still didn’t manage a win. Our best result was with 2 drawn rinks in the Fear Cup against Yeovil, but lost overall.
Social Report.
75 tickets sold for the annual Pig Roast
£200 for the band

£226 raised by the raffle for the Children’s Hospice
